In Individual Therapy, I work to provide a safe space where you can express your thoughts and feelings. It is often helpful to talk about these things with a therapist who is not involved with your life in a way that your partner, family or colleagues are. Through the process of therapy, you can unload things that have been on your mind, obtain new perspectives about yourself or situations, feel more in charge of your life, or simply feel better.
In Couple Therapy, I work to provide a safe space where couples can express their thoughts and feelings to each other and hear the other in a non-defensive manner. In relationships, we may sometimes get stuck into patterns that hinder us from relating to our partner in a loving and satisfying manner. Couple Therapy can be a great way to explore and understand what happens between the two partners so that you can learn to communicate effectively with each other even during disagreements.
I work from a relational approach, which is to help us understand how relationships shape our life experiences. This approach can also help us explore patterns in the thoughts and feelings we have toward ourselves. I also take multicultural perspectives in treatment, meaning that I try to understand how we think, feel, and behave based on our cultural and societal contexts. Furthermore, I use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) when I work with people with trauma.
What EMDR is:
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a specific technique that is used to treat trauma. It aims to help clients to feel freer from past traumatic experiences so that they become more present to themselves, their loved ones and life in general.
How it works:
In EMDR sessions, the therapist helps the client to facilitate processing traumatic memories via eye movement. This process happens organically when we sleep, going through REM (rapid eye movement) sleep and non-REM sleep. During REM sleep, the brain processes recent events so that memories are stored away from the short-term memory area to the long-term memory area. When we go through traumatic events, our memory can be stuck in the short term area so that we feel upset by it even years after the events. When memories are stored in the long-term memory area, on the other hand, the events seem more remote and we are much less affected by them. During the EMDR sessions, we induce eye movement to help the brain process the upsetting events so that the client may feel calmer and less triggered by the memory.
I have witnessed numbers of people who have done EMDR therapy with me feel a lot freer from the traumatic experiences. In this way, they have more headspace for their present experiences and feel more positive and calmer toward themselves, their loved ones, and life in general.
If you are new to EMDR, it is natural if you have questions about it. Usually I spend one or two sessions for preparation before moving into actual processing, so that you have ample time to talk about your questions and to do some preparation work.
